An England Lioness started here

Niamh Charles wore a West Kirby United shirt in England training ahead of Euro 2025.

24 June 2025

Ahead of Euro 2025, the FA surprised the England senior women's squad at St George's Park with the shirts of the clubs where each of them first played. The players trained in them on the Sir Bobby Charlton pitch as part of the Made for this Game campaign.

Niamh Charles wore ours.

Niamh grew up in Greasby and began her football with West Kirby United before going on to Liverpool, Chelsea and England. She was 26 at the time, and by then an established international.

The other shirts in that session came from clubs like Alnwick Town, St Martins and Brandon Groves — ordinary grassroots clubs, alongside academies at Villarreal and QPR. Over 150 coaches and players from those first clubs were invited along to meet their former players.

Why it matters here

Every Saturday morning at Anglesey Road there are girls turning up to play for the first time, some of whom have never kicked a ball before. It is worth them knowing that a player who did exactly that went on to wear an England shirt.

Our girls' section runs from U7 to an open age women's team, and the Sunday morning sessions are free and open to anyone.
